Shielding Design for the Lcls Bth and Undulator

چکیده
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the world’s first hard xray free electron laser is under construction at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and is expected to be completed in 2009. LCLS will deliver unprecedented bright and short x-ray laser pulses that shall enable frontier new science research in biology, nanomaterials and non-crystalline imaging. Over 400 m of LCLS tunnel have been implemented with the Monte Carlo cascade codes Fluka and MARS15. An extensive survey has been conducted to determine the radiation levels and shielding requirements from the Beam Transfer Hall to the Near Experimental Hall, covering in detail the 33 segments of the undulator, collimators, magnets, beam lines, mirrors, hutches, etc. and considering several radiation sources.

Studies on Bremsstrahlung sources in the BTH and LCLS undulator Irradiation of the FEE by Bremsstrahlung beams from these sources
The bremsstrahlung power generated in the BTH and undulator and reaching the FEE has been simulated with the FLUKA [1] intra-nuclear cascade code. Calculations contain a detailed description of all 33 segments, quadrupoles, collimators, dump systems and surrounding walls and halls. Three bremsstrahlung sources are surveyed. The first one describes the photons arising from the interception of th...
متن کاملResistive wall wakefield in the LCLS undulator beam pipe
We have shown that, due to the ac resistive wall wakefield, the present LCLS undulator design, with its round copper beam pipe, will result in an unacceptably large energy variation induced within the bunch over the length of the undulator (0.6%). If, instead, we use a flat, aluminum chamber, the energy variation can be reduced to within acceptable limits (∼ 0.2%). Finally we have shown that th...
متن کاملR&d towards a Delta-type Undulator for the Lcls*
The LCLS generates linearly polarized, intense, high brightness x-ray pulses from planar fixed-gap undulators. While the fixed-gap design supports a very successful and tightly controlled alignment concept, it provides only limited taper capability (up to 1% through canted pole and horizontal position adjustability) and lacks polarization control. The latter is of great importance for soft x-ra...
متن کاملLinac Coherent Light Source Undulator Rf Bpm System *
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will be the world's first x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) when it becomes operational in 2009. The LCLS is currently in the construction phase. The beam position monitor (BPM) system planned for the LCLS undulator will incorporate a high-resolution X-band cavity BPM system described in this paper. The BPM system will provide high-resolution measurements of...
متن کاملOptics Design for a Soft X-ray FEL at the SLAC A-Line
LCLS capabilities can be significantly extended with a second undulator aiming at the soft x-ray spectrum (1 – 5 nm). To allow for simultaneous hard and soft x-ray operations, 14 GeV beams at the end of the LCLS accelerator can be intermittently switched into the SLAC A-line (the beam transport line to End Station A) where the second undulator may be located. In this paper, we discuss the A-lin...
